Holy Her

Goddess of Laussel, c. 22,000-18,000 BCE

“Before the shrinking of the Feminine was the Goddess—and all that is split in our own lives was in harmony in Hers. She was profoundly in Her body. Her body itself was sacred. In the Old Religion, body and spirit were one. She was seen as substantial, as essentially embodied. Her thighs, Her Belly, Her breasts were generous, Her physical strength apparent. We miss the beauty of such an image, we who have been taught to measure ourselves endlessly. Too fat, too thin, too flat, too wrinkled. Our bodies are never good, and in themselves. We must deny our naturalness to see beauty.

What we learn to reject was once holy. What we learn to hide behind closed doors was once celebrated in the open. Blood was sacred to the Goddess—menstrual blood. Some of Her images were painted red between the legs. What some of us and many of our mothers learned to see as ‘the curse’ was once seen as the Blessing, women’s particular creative magic. The blood that flows of itself and not from a wounding was thought to be the very source of life. One early creation tale stated than when the Mother created man and woman, She made them from a mixture of Her menstrual blood and clay. Moreover, every woman carried some of the Goddess’s sacred substance and participated in Her ability to create life.”

2 cards drawn from Witches’ Wisdom Tarot Deck:

4 Moon
Mystery. Wildness. Physical instinct. Liberated feminine power

“There is a wildness within us that yearns to be physical, sensual, animal, free. But fear of this unknown part, of the shadows where it dwells, of where it might take us, has left us all only half alive…

Wildness is the only path to the moon. There is no need to dread the companions who will teach you how to shapeshift into hoof and horn, paw and claw, fur and feathers, fins and scales, bud and leaf and flower. Set your foot upon the silver path. The moon will light your way from fear to the fierce and freeing desires of your wild and natural self.”

4 of Water
Open your Heart. Grieve. Reach out. Rejoice

“Whale is a wise and compassionate being who will guide you through the currents of your feelings and show you how to live in a connected way. Invite them into your life. Journey, dream meditate, pray, study, visit with and volunteer for whale. Allow whale energy to move through you…

Let whale teach you to sing.”

2 cards drawn from The Wildwood Tarot Deck:

6 of Vessels
Reunion

“Recognition of ancestral and reincarnation memory.”

5 of Bows
Empowerment

“The time of self empowerment by seizing the initiative is here.”

I will no longer whisper my prayers in secret
for fear of being called a wild-eyed witch.
Look for me in the forest,

howling at the moon.

Playful Sagittarius New Moon

New moon in Sagittarius, the fiery adventurer.

There is a social, communal feel to this moon time. It’s not the usual ‘contemplate your navel’ new moon.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself suddenly wanting to explore a new place or a new topic. Perhaps you can simply stop working and play awhile?

And don’t let Thanksgiving feast prep get in the way of fun. Add a bit of singing, dancing and goofing off to your cooking and cleaning regimen.

Remember, all work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.

Don’t be Jack.

I No Longer Pray

An Offering to Earth , Sun and Moon

I no longer pray—
now I drink dark chocolate
and let the moon sing to me.

I no longer pray—
I let my ancestors dance
through my hips
at the slightest provocation.

I no longer pray—
I go to the river
and howl my ancient pain
into the current.

I no longer pray—
I ache, I desire,
I say “yes” to my longing.

I no longer pray as I was taught
but as the stars crawl
onto my lap like soft animals at nighttime
and God tucks my hair behind my ears
with the gentle fingers of her wind
and a new intimacy is uncovered in everything,
perhaps it’s that I’m finally learning
how to pray.

Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse in Taurus

Full moon in earthy, sensual Taurus. A total lunar eclipse will be visible in North America in the early morning hours of Tuesday. AND the sun is sitting in Scorpio communing with Venus.

All of this makes for an intense few days. Expect to feel stirred up and emotional. Be gentle with yourself. Stay grounded – root deep.

Make time every day to do whatever calms you; reading a good novel, taking a bubble bath, going for a hike in nature, meditating, practicing yoga… whatever calms your mind and relaxes your body.

You may receive insights during the peak eclipse energy. Don’t try to force it – just be open to ah ha’s and new ideas that surface.

Now is NOT the time to make big life decisions. Save those for another week.

The World Stops

god is a mother
and with that
sentence
the world stops
the world always stops
when woman and
divine
commingle
as if the
feminine
dilutes the
miraculous
when in reality
it embodies it
when jesus turns water
to wine
they clap
but when women turn breasts
to milk
they cringe
a broken man’s body
is celebrated each sunday
while a broken woman’s body
is just hidden away
and it’s no wonder
that mother is a word
used by men
to demonize those
who don’t claim the name
and weaponized to shame
those who step out of line
because
their ideal
woman
plays the role of
nurturer and silencer
in pews
built and led by them
but
when god
becomes mother
she is neither quiet
or compliant
she leads confidently
she questions authority
she commands respect
which might be the problem
for mother god
did not gather us up
carelessly
but took her time with it
she fed us milk
birthed our souls
and broke her body
and the permanence
can be uncomfortable
and to disentangle god
from motherhood
Is impossible
but
to disentangle god
from womanhood
is sinful
because seeing god as mother
is one step closer
to seeing god in me
and it’s in that
i am truly
born again
