Pause in this Moment
“Every moment is the guru”
~Charlotte Joko Beck
I take Dog Goddess Brigit on a walk by the river. We walk the same path almost every morning. On many occasions, I have returned from our walk and realized that I didn’t really notice my surroundings at all that day. I have been completely lost in my thoughts, unaware of what was right in front of me. I have been wrapped up in planning my future or ruminating on my past and the river slipped by unnoticed by me.
But some days are different; some days I actually focus on the path and my steps and the sounds on the wind. I notice the feel of the leash in my hand, the smell of some bush or tree nearby. And those moments when I am actually present and aware are so potent! On my aware days, I notice many new things that I never noticed before – even though it is the exact same path Brigit and I walked yesterday. An aware walk is magical.
Focus on Joy Now
But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air,
but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle
which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves,
the black, curious eyes of a child — our own two eyes.
All is a miracle.”
I wonder how much I miss when I am walking through my day half awake; not noticing what’s right in front of me here and now? Or when I am constantly cranking about something bad that happened yesterday or that might happen tomorrow? What would it take for me to double or triple how many moments of the day that I am happily present here and now? What if I could stop analyzing EVERYTHING and put my big, silly human brain to work finding the joy that is here in this moment? What is the value of analyzing what happened yesterday if I miss today? How much richer can my day to day reality become if I make awareness and joy my priorities?
Focus and awareness can shift everything. Each moment of life holds a choice; I can sleepwalk through my day or wake in wonder to this miraculous planet and all the beautiful beings I share it with. When I choose joy and wonder, the world seems to shower me with even more joyful and miraculous experiences.
Whatever I focus on, increases. If I want joy and wonder in my life, then it is best to focus on every iota of joy and wonder that the Universe offers to me. We each have a choice in every moment, and I choose joy and wonder now.
Can I pause and get still enough to see the gifts
waiting just below the surface of my day?
Can I wake up and embrace here, now?
Whatever I choose to focus on, molds and shapes each moment of my day. What happens when I wake up and look at life through wondering, childlike eyes? Just by watching and wondering, I can unlock my inner knowing and intuition. Just by wondering, I open my heart to more joy. Wondering shifts my energy. Just by wondering, my day transforms.
Wonder opens my awareness and expands my joy in the moment.
Wonder changes everything.
